Lithuanian Language Days are being organized in Lithuania for the tenth time, dedicated to fostering and increasing the spread of the Lithuanian language. They take place from February 16 to March 11, a period that marks the most important dates of the Lithuanian statehood.
On Lithuanian Language Days, many different events are held throughout the country and abroad. Each nation has its own language – a unique feature, an expression of people's thinking, the uniqueness of the nation, traditions, customs and history. Therefore, each nation tries to protect and cherish it. We really have something to be proud of, because the modern Lithuanian language is not only one of the oldest languages, originating from the ancient Indo-European proto-language, but also the least changed, and in 1992 UNESCO declared the Lithuanian language the most beautiful language in the world.
Members of the Lithuanian Language Society – Chairwoman of the Utena branch Rima Žarskutė and lecturers Vaida Steponėnienė, Ramutė Kavoliūnienė and Žydra Kuprėnaitė – invited international students to a quiz “About Lithuania in Lithuanian” on February 25. The event was hosted by Deividas Kurlavičius, a specialist in the International Relations Department.
Students from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Ghana, Ukraine and Latvia searched for Lithuanian words of thanks, greetings and farewells, decided which language family the Lithuanian language belongs to, and what its unique features were. Those who demonstrated the best knowledge of the Lithuanian language were awarded prizes with college symbols.
